How I got my niece to like plain yogurt...

Hey Reader,

We've been re-posting our journey of following our 60 Day Baby Led Feeding Meal Plan with my niece, Aila, and I'm super grateful because I caught two pretty amazing things on camera.

On Day 13, I got footage of Aila absolutely refusing plain Greek yogurt after the first bite. She hated the taste (the tartness was probably a lot for her) and we actually had to end the meal early. I was able to get a decent introduction to milk as an allergen, but it was sketch.

On Day 14, we turned it around using feeding strategies I teach about in our courses and private counselling! It was soooo cool to see how another exposure and some no-pressure techniques to familiarize her with the yogurt worked wonders.

Here are some tips for a baby who doesn't want to eat a specific food:

  • If it's a puree, dump it directly on the highchair tray to entice them to put their hands in it. Swirl it around yourself and get messy with your baby. Move from having it on their hands to putting a dab on their arm, to their cheek, and then their lip (with time and based on their reaction to the previous steps).
  • Model eating it (and get silly). Smell the food in front of them. Chomp loudly on the food in front of them.
  • "Ignore" them for 5 minutes. Be at the table and watch from the corner of your eye for safety. This takes the attention away from them so they feel less pressure and can explore it on their own terms with no one watching. Just eat and chat with other family members.
  • Don't continually try to offer it for them to hold or bring it to their mouth if they don't seem ready to move on from the previous step of touching/playing with it.

What's amazing is that our 60 Day Baby Led Feeding Meal Plan purposely introduces yogurt with no fruit mixed in, so babies can get used to the tart flavor and grow their repertoire of foods accepted!

We love fruit-sweetened yogurt as much as the next person, but we know that if we immediately went to sweet flavors (especially after she rejected it plain), we would lose the opportunity to teach her to accept a much BIGGER variety of flavors, and it builds her foundation to like ALL foods and flavors.

Course feedback

See what this mama said in an email to us this week:

"Can I just say I LOVED LOVED your course and format! As a first time mom, I had no idea where to start but your videos made it easy to follow and the meal plan was fantastic. It really set me up for success to know how to feed my baby and also learn how to incorporate what we eat to give to him to make meals easier. Thank you so much for putting this material together!"
