Let me tell you a story about my experience with allergenic foods.

First off...thank goodness neither of my sons are allergic to anything. I remember my sister growing up with a severe allergy to chickpeas and how scary that was for us all when we literally lived on hummus. It was worrisome enough with that...let alone being allergic to something way more common in food like nuts.

So, yes, I'm very grateful.

One thing I remember so clearly though, was when my first son was 9 months old.

My mom was watching him for the day when she called me and started recapping the day to me.

Mom: "We went for a walk, he napped, and then we came back and had eggs for lunch..."

Me: "WHAT?! Mom!! He's not supposed to have eggs until he's 1!"

Mom: "What do you mean? I always used to offer you eggs when you were a baby!"

And then an argument ensued.

You see...this was back in 2008 and research has flip-flopped many times over the decades with what allergens to introduce when.

The thing is, in previous years, many of the recommendations were based on case studies (aka observational studies) and cultural practices.

But thankfully, we've had some really great emerging research in the last decade that has been much more controlled and deliberate...and they've been showing us a much clearer answer to when introducing allergenic foods should really happen!
